You Should Not Do This

Here are a few common examples I have come up with of bad examples of Lolita attempts. Here I will explain what is wrong and you should not do this.

Many beginners might look at this and think it is a great example of Gothic Lolita, but actually, it’s not that great. See the lace going the whole way down both sides? It appears to be some form of cheap synthetic lace. It is also very big, and takes most of the attention from the rest of the dress. The rest of the lace also looks very out of place and appears to be bad lace too. Her socks were also an awkward choice for this outfit because as you can see, there is no white corset lacing on her dress to match that of her socks.

There are a few reasons why this is a bad example of Lolita. First of all, notice the corset lacing. It looks very awkward and sloppily done. It is also very long horizontally which makes it seem even more awkward. Then there is the high collar. High collars can work very well with the right dress, but it simply does not look good with this type of dress. Then there is the random cut-off point making the black part end and the rest of the bottom to become white. This also looks awkward, because the black just stops all together, the assymetrical part on the side makes this look even worse.

Dresses of this style seem to be quite popular with beginners for some reason. But the fact of the matter is, this is a terrible dress. First of all, and I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, the lace that seems to frame the torso looks very cheap. The corset lacing is also badly done and the ribbon coming off of it is far too long. Then there is the color combination. It is okay to have the black, white, and red combination if you are wearing something plaid, but not like this. The red really detracts from the rest of the outfit making it look bad. This dress also happens to be from an Ebay seller, which could explain the obviously bad construction.
